Review to 'Russia's Rearm'

I believe that Russia's recent approach to rebuild its military defence is untimely as now a bigger crisis is on the surface- unemployment. I acknowledge the fact that military defence is an important aspect in the country's survival however the priority should be placed at reducing the unemployment rate by spending big money into creating new jobs or sustain the economy rather than on improving the technology of military weapons. Satisfying the people's needs and desires are clearly important as a country's government can not afford to displease the people as democracy is mostly used. Hence, the inceased spending in military defence is a risk-involving move as people's needs are misplaced in this case.

However, as Russia's approach to increase their military power, the weapon technology is being constantly upgraded and is also a source of income for Russia by selling the manufactured weapons to other countries. But, the purpose of the income generated is not clear on whether it is used to rebuild the economy or to further fund them in the upgrading of military power. Supposingly if the generated income is used to rebuild the economy, we can claim that the approach is well-planned as Russia can now strengthen the military and also rebuild the economy using the income generated, however it will be a bad one if it's not the above case.

Also, Guy Anderson mentioned, "The West sees it as saber-rattling, but for Russia it is about retaking what it sees as its rightful position in the world". For the West, the rebuilding of the military is alarming as there's hardly the need to engage in any conflicts or fighting in the near future and yet the Russians are still reinforcing their arms and in the eyes of the peace loving countries.

  1. you mentioned that if the income generated is used to rebuild the economy, it is well-planned. However, you did not mention what kind of method is to be used to "rebuild" the economy. Rebuilding the economy needs large amount of money and timefor it to take effect as well as to train the people. Time, however is not really on their side as their income earing from selling military arms are decreasing due to the fact that India and China are producing their own weapons. In this case, isn't it difficult to rebuild the economy?

  2. You could have mentioned that the increase in military spending can actually help in reducing unemployment as well when you need engineers, soldiers, researchers etc. A pool of talent is definitely needed for military industries and the ties between other countries as mentioned can also bring about extra revenue to further spend on military or other areas. This can be seen as an investment by the government to get stronger(in terms of military)and thus show the world what a force they will be. Also, since Russia is rather a large country, the overall high unemployment rate is unsurprising if urban and rural areas are to be considered.

  3. In my opinion, rebuliding the military may not be a bad plan afterall. Russia's economy may be in a frail state but as mentioned above, military upgrading could also be a source of income.I trust that wise decisions will take place thereafter.Especially with the economic crisis being a global phenomenon,it is difficult to improve the economy by pure funding.Military upgrades are essential for other nations which will instead be an advantage for Russia to improve their economy.Without the development of their military, they also risk losing more talented engineers that could help in the upgrading of weapons.
Conflicts with other countries over their expansion of miliatary poweress can be resolved by dialoges to ensure others of their intentions or other means
